Men's Basketball: Macalester set for two games in next three days

Scots face Concordia, St. Thomas in MIAC action this week.

On Tap
Macalester will play twice in three days this week when it takes on Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes Concordia and St. Thomas.

The Scots play host to the Cobbers this evening at 7:45 p.m. at the Leonard Center while they will meet the Tommies, Wednesday, in a 7 p.m. game at UST's Schoenecker Arena.

The Records
Macalester 2-6 overall, 0-4 MIAC; Concordia 5-3 overall, 1-2 MIAC; St. Thomas 9-1 overall, 4-1 MIAC.

When Last We Met
Concordia handed Macalester a 76-65 defeat in Moorhead, Minn., Jan. 22, 2014. Kareem Ismail posted a double-double for the Scots with 14 points and 15 rebounds while Dylan Kilgour led the offense with 19 points and Griffin Glatt chipped in with 13 points.

Ryan Rude had 18 points and Tom Fraase and Brandon Giese had 17 apiece. All three are back this season for the Cobbers.

St. Thomas took an 89-40 decision from Macalester at Schoenecker Arena, Jan. 28, 2014, behind a 53.3 percent shooting performance from the floor and a 38-25 rebounding advantage.

Conner Nord and Dylan Stewart each had 16 points for the Tommies while Kilgour had 10 points to lead the Scots.

Last Time Out
Macalester cut a 14-point Hamline lead down to five in the second half but the Pipers hit eight of 10 free throws in the final two minutes and pulled away for a 69-55 MIAC win, Saturday, at Hamline's Hutton Arena.

After falling behind by seven points early in the game, the Scots found their game and kept pace with the Pipers, eventually tying the game, for the first time, at 21-21 when Kilgour hit a three-point shot with four minutes, 10 seconds to play in the first half.

The teams traded points to tie the game at 23-23 before a pair of Zach Gullerud free throws gave Macalester its only lead of the game, at 25-23. An Austin Johnson three-point basket gave Hamline a 26-25 lead heading into the intermission and the Pipers would not relinquish that lead.

A 15-5 run to open the second half gave Hamline some breathing room bug, after going up by 14 with 6:16 to play, the Scots began another charge from behind, scoring the game's next nine points to get to within five points with 2:25 to play in the game.

Macalester got the bulk of its scoring from three players, as Kilgour, with 16, Bernhard, 15, and Ismail, 14, combined for 45 of the team's 55 points. Bernhard, who made his first start of the season, also tied for a game high in rebounds with seven.

A Changing of the Guard
After using the same starting lineup for the first seven games, head coach Tim Whittle moved Bernhard into the lineup at one of the guard positions and the third-year Scot responded by scoring a career-high 15 points while matching his career-high with seven rebounds.

The start for Bernhard was his first since Jan. 15, 2014, in a home loss to St. Olaf.

He's the Boss
Tim Whittle is in his sixth season at Macalester and owns a 14-118 career record.

Whittle came to Macalester following a successful assistant coaching stint at national-powerhouse Washington University in St. Louis, where he was the top assistant and recruiting coordinator for the two-time NCAA Division III national champions (2008 & 2009). In five seasons he helped guide the Bears to a 112-30 overall record and three consecutive Final Four appearances (2007-09).

Prior to his stint with Washington University, Whittle served as an assistant coach for three years (2001-2004) at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tenn., where he was also head men's golf coach and assistant cross country coach.

In 1996, following his graduation from Washington University with a degree in finance and management, he began a four-year career in the banking business for SunTrust Bank in Atlanta, before joining the Florida Marlins. As the manager of finance, he coordinated efforts to fund a $400 million baseball stadium in downtown Miami.

As a player, Whittle was a four-year letter-winner at Washington University, helping the Bears to a 79-27 record and two NCAA playoff appearances, including reaching the 1996 Elite Eight. He received a Master's in Education degree in 2008 from William Woods University in Fulton, Mo.

Up Next
The Scots play three games next week, beginning with a 7 p.m. game, Monday, versus Martin Luther College in New Ulm, Minn. They will then be at home for a pair of MIAC games, Wednesday, at 7 p.m., versus Bethel and Saturday, at 3 p.m., versus Saint Mary's.
