Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Hamline scored 11 points in a three minute, 25 second span of the third quarter and it was enough for the Pipers to regain The Paint Bucket from Macalester as the Scots dropped a 23-13 decision.
Both teams drove into their opponents' territory on their first possessions with Hamline moving 70 yards on 12 plays on the game's first drive before missing a 20-yard field goal attempt.
Macalester then moved the ball to the Pipers' 38-yard line before turning the ball over with a fumble.
Hamline again moved into the Scots' half of the field before being forced to punt after reaching the 30-yard line.
The Pipers then got the ball back on the Macalester 17-yard line after an interception and needed just two plays to put the game's first points on the scoreboard with 2:00 to play in the opening quarter.
Macalester's ensuing position resulted in a three-and-out series but a bad snap on the ensuing punt attempt saw the ball roll through the Scots' end zone for a safety to give Hamline a 9-0 lead just five second into the second quarter.
The score remained that way until Macalester put together the game's longest drive, a 14-play, 80-yard drive which was capped by
Zandy Stowell scoring on a three-yard run with one second remaining in the opening half.
Hamline's defense tightened its clamp on the Scots' offense in the second half, forcing Macalester to punt on its first four second-half possessions as the Scots were only able move the ball 40 yards on the four possessions.
After a punt gave Macalester its second possession in the second half at their own three, the Scots were forced to punt as well and a 19-yard punt set up the hosts at their opponent's 31-yard line and, from there, they moved to the eight before settling for a 25-yard field goal.
Maclester was forced to punt again after having the ball for just 1:50 and Hamline proceeded to go 49 yards in four plays to score their second touchdown of the game and take a 20-6 lead.
After a clock-killing, 13-play, 51-yard drive on their next possession, the Pipers tacked on three more points to take a 23-6 lead.
Macalester finally got untracked offensively and marched 76 yards in just eight plays before
Ethan Carpenter scored on a two-yard run with 5:24 to play.
The defense did its part by getting the ball back to the offense just over a minute later, only giving up two yards on three plays, forcing Hamline to punt with the Scots getting the ball back at their own 32.
After moving to the Pipers' 36-yard line, an interception ended the drive and Hamline was able to run out the game's final 2:48 to secure the victory.
The Pipers' ground game proved to be the different as they rushed for 272 yards while Macalester picked up just 109 yards on the ground. The difference in rushing led Hamline to a 397-229 advantage in total offense.
Samson Bialostock led the offense with 62 rushing yards and 182 yards of total offense after adding 120 yards passing. Stowell and 60 yards rushing while
Ben Hillmann had three catches for 22 yards to lead Scots' receivers.
Defensively,
