Baseball: Scots drop pair to Johnnies

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Macalester fell to St. John's on both ends of the doubleheader at Nicholson Field Tuesday afternoon by scores of 9-2 and 5-2. The Scots fall to 11-20-1 overall and 3-13 in the MIAC, while the Johnnies improve to 17-6 overall and 9-5 in the MIAC.

In Game One, John Schumer picked up his first win of the season for the Johnnies, throwing five innings of two-run ball. He walked three batters, while also striking out two.

The Johnnies scored five in the sixth to put the game away and break open a 3-2 game. Macalester pitcher Justin Kleschen (Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) took the loss for the Scots, giving up five earned runs in five and 2/3 innings. The Scots committed three errors leading to four unearned runs in the first game.

Quentin Stuart (Nashville, Ind. / Indiana Academy) and Ross Bronfenbrenner (San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) each collected an RBI double in the opening contest, accounting for two of the Scots' four hits.

In Game Two, the Scots jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first innings thanks to RBI singles from Stuart  and Tom Forster (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater). After that Johnnie pitcher Justin Thompson settled down and did not allow a run the rest of the game. Thompson finished off his complete game by striking out the side in the ninth inning to contribute to his final total of seven K's.

Lucas Babinec (Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery-Blair) threw five solid innings for the Scots, allowing two earned runs and striking out three Johnnies. Brendan O'Connor (Piedmont, Calif.) took the loss in four innings of relief.

Bronfenbrenner went 2-4 and scored a run to lead the Macalester offensive attack. Forster also contributed a hit, an RBI and a stolen base.
