Baseball: Late rally leads to MIAC sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Down by a run going into the seventh and final inning of the opening game, Macalester rallied for five runs to win 8-4, and then went on to win the nightcap 5-0 and gain an MIAC doubleheader over Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.  With their second straight sweep, the Scots improve to 10-6 on the season, 3-9 in the MIAC.  The Gusties drop to 5-15 overall and 2-10 in the conference.

In game one, Macalester out-hit Gustavus 12-5, but could not put things away until the final frame.  Behind 4-3 after six innings, the Scots mounted their decisive last-inning rally.  Tom Forster (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) drove in the tying-run, while Mac followed with a two-run double by Peter Bertel (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) and two-run single by Sam Berk (So., Miami, Fla. / Palmer Trinity School).

Lucas Babinec (Jr., Silver Spring, Md. / Montgomery Blair)  pitched the first 4 2/3 innings and the win was awarded to Forest Redlin (Fy., Tempe, Ariz. / Tempe Prep Academy), who pitched two innings of relief without yielded a hit or a run.

Forster went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, collecting a double and a triple, to lead the attack.

Starting pitcher Justin Kleschen (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) was superb in his six-hit shutout victory in game two, giving up just six hits and forcing 16 ground-outs in his nine-innings of duty.

Macalester scored a single run in the top of the third to get things going, and added four runs in the sixth inning of this nine-inning contest.    Forster added two more hits to bring his team-leading batting average on the season to .488.  Forster and Scott Foltz (Jr., St. Louis Park, Minn.).

The Scots travel to Winona tomorrow for a pair of MIAC games at St. Mary's.  Their next 11 games are at home.
