Baseball: Scots get 30 hits in sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Macalester pounded out 30 hits and received dominant pitching to sweep North Central University 18-2 and 10-0 in a home non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at Nicholson Field.  The Scots move to 8-16 on the year.

The day got off to a good start for the Scots, who scored four runs in each of the first and second innings of the opener.  Mac finished with 21 hits, including three apiece from Ross Bronfenbrenner (Sr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy), Quentin Stuart (Fy., Nashville, Ind. / Indiana Academy), Justin Sims (Sr., Bronx, N.Y. / The Beacon School) and Scott Foltz (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.).

Meanwhile, the pitching staff was getting productive relief efforts from Alex Isaacson and Ryan Fleming.  Isaacson came into the game in the second frame and in four innings of work surrendered just one earned runs and three hits while striking out three.  Fleming worked the final two innings without allowing a hit and fanned three.

Macalester put the game with eight runs in the fourth, with the big blow behind a two-run Tom Forster (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) triple.

The Scots pitched even better in the 10-0 shutout in the nightcap and allowed the Rams just one hit on the game.  Starter Paul Schubring (Jr., Gilbert, Ariz. / Chandler Preparatory) and reliever Jamie Progebin (Fy., Washington, D.C. / Maret)  pitched three innings each, and Anson Junsti (Fy., Columbia, Md. / McDonogh School) worked the seventh.

Leadoff hitter Nick Sia (So., Crofton, Md. / South River) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Peter Bertel (Fy., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) drove in three runs and Sims collected two hits.
