Macalester and Bethel travelled to Mt. Vernon, Iowa, to find warmer weather for the MIAC opener Saturday afternoon. Bethel spoiled the start of the conference season for the Scots by gaining wins by scores of 4-3 and 11-6.
In the first game played at Cornell College, the Royals tallied the walk-off game-winning run on a seventh-inning single. Macalester had 11 hits on the game, including two each from
Jonathan Melms (So., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran),
Tom Forster (Jr., Stillwater, Minn.) and
Aidan Hennen (Fy., St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall). Mac starter
Justin Kleschen (Jr., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) pitched six solid innings on the mound, allowing just six hits.
Saturday's nightcap was higher scoring, with BU coming away with a sweep. Forster went 3-for-3 with two runs driven in for Macalester, while leadoff hitter
Ross Bronfenbrenner (Sr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) scored two runs.
