Box Score ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Stevenson used a 16-point advantage in points off turnovers to their advantage as the extra possessions gained by the Mustangs allowed them to take enough shots to overcome Macalester and claim a 61-58 win.
The Scots committed 20 turnovers, to Stevenson's 11, and the vistors gained a 26-10 scoring advantage.
The Mustangs also turned their first-half shooting woes around in the second half. After hitting just 31.3 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half, Stevens came back to shoot 61.9 percent in the second.
Shooting, which has been a problem for Macalester of late, was not in the loss as the Scots shot 50 percent for the game, including 56.5 percent in the second half.
Macalester went into the lockerroom at halftime with a 27-26 lead despite spending much of the opening 20 minutes playing from behind.Stevenson took its first lead of the game, 4-2, two minutes, 37 seconds into the contest and the Scots did not tie the game again until 4:37 remained in the half when
Hans Erickson hit the first of two free throws.
From that point, the game would see four ties and four lead changes in the opening half, with the final lead change coming when
Kareem Ismail scored with 13 seconds remaining.
The second half saw nine lead changes, all of which came in the first 10 minutes before the Mustangs eventually built the biggest lead of the game, 57-49, with 4:19 to play.
After Colby Giacubeno, who came off the bench to lead Stevenson with 18 points, gave his team that eight-point lead,
Dylan Kilgour hit a three-pointer and
Jordan Black made a pair of baskets, including a three pointer, which got the Scots back to within two at 59-57 with 1:57 to play.
That lead would fall to one when Ismail hit the second of two free throws but Christian Roberts made a pair of free throws for the Mustangs with 21 seconds remaining and a late three-point attempt by
Max Horvath failed to send the game to overtime.
Ismail proved to be a force inside for the Scots, hitting eight of 12 shots and finishing with game highs in points, with 19, and rebounds, eight, while contributing three assists and three blocked shots. Kilgour chipped in with 12 points and four assists.
Macalester is now idle for the next 15 days before returning to play in 2015 with a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Hamline, Jan. 3, which gets underway at 3 p.m. and will be the first of three games in five days for the Scots coming off their holiday break.
