Box Score WHITEWATER, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater opened the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs and showed why they have won five national titles in the last seven years, scoring on all five of its first-half possessions en route to a 55-2 win over Macalester, which was making its first NCAA playoff appearance.
The Scots were on the wrong end of the battle for field position most of the day and the Warhawks made them pay immediately, forcing Macalester to punt on its first possession and then, after getting the ball at their own 45-yard line, UW-Whitewater need just six plays before Jordan Ratliffe scored the first of his three touchdowns on the days with a two-yard run.
Trailing 34-0, Macalester got its only point of the game when the defense forced a three-and-out on the Warhawks' second possession of the second half, following a quarterback sack by
Reid Callahan on a third-and-seven at thir own 23.
UW-Whitewater's first punt attempt went awry when the snap went into the end zone and punter Lake Bachar was taken down by
Jack Schultenover for a safety.
Macalester was held to a season-low 122 yards rushing, with
Samson Bialostok carrying 19 times for 68 yards. He also attempted a career-high 49 passes, completing 20 for 232 yards.
Zandy Stowell had 50 yards rushing on 14 carrries while
Ben Hillmann led the Scots with seven catches for 42 yards.
Defensively,
Jole Miller led Macalester with 10 total tackles, including eight solos.
Ryan Fleming had nine tackles and also recovered a fumble.
The Scots finish the season with a 9-2 record, setting a single-season school record for wins while winning their first outright conference title since 1925 and their first conference title since sharing the 1947 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with St. Thomas.
