HOW IT HAPPENED• Just before the game's 30-minute mark,
Charlie Spurr sent a ball from the right corner into the six-yard box, where
Austin Burrows redirected the ball into far side of the goal.
NOTES• Macalester had just one shot on goal in the match; Burrows' goal at the 29-minute, 54-second mark.
• Vainer matched his season high with seven saves; a number he posted in a 0-0, double-overtime tie at Wisconsin-Platteville (9/13/14); while extending his shutout streak to 233 minutes, 59 seconds.
• Vainer's seven shutout overall leads all Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference goalkeepers and he shares the league lead with three shutouts in conference games.
• Macalester was forced to play a man down for the game's final 29:33 after a red card was issued to
Jake Burke.
• The win over Gustavus Adolphus marked the first time the Scots have taken a point from the Gusties since Oct. 8, 2005.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH GREGG OLSON• On the
victory: "We had some nice attacking sequences in the first half, including the goal, and, after the red card, our guys played very intelligently. We managed the game and held onto the lead. Sometimes playing like a Premiership team means great attacking soccer. Sometimes it means managing the game."
• Discussing the expectations going into the game: "Today we knew that a game would break out and that we had to be good on the ball in the midfield in order to create chances. We did a great job against a very good center midfield."
• On his team's goal: "Austin's goal was absolutely first class. He took it like a seasoned professional."
• Talking about his team's play in the second half: "The second half was a big statement to go toe-to-toe and to have played 30 minutes down a man. We quickly changed shape and the guys adjusted very well to it. The team's overall performance was disciplined. To play down a man for as long as we did and not concede any real scoring opportunities was gritty."
• About the effort his team received in goal: "Zeke's performance in goal was tremendous. He seemed comfortable all game, even when he had to make one tremendous save early. He also made some difficult crosses look routine."
• On the play of his one senior in the starting lineup: "
Cole Erickson moved us around the field as a great leader should. It was like having a coach on the field."
THE HOME STRETCH• Now tied for third in the MIAC standings, the Scots will play their final two league games at home against the bottom two teams in the conference teams in the standings; Concordia and St. Mary's.
• With six teams advancing to the MIAC playoffs, Macalester finds itself in a three-way tie for third place with Carleton and Gustavus Adolphus.
• The Scots now have a tie-break advantage over the Gusties and tied Carleton. However, both teams have a game in hand on the Scots, which they will make up this week.
• Augsburg and St. Thomas, three points back in the standings, also have a game in hand over Macalester.
UP NEXT• Up next for the Scots is a Saturday afternoon game, Oct. 25, at Wisconsin-Superior. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
