Box Score
Macalester hosted neighborhood rival St. Thomas Wednesday night to get the MIAC campaign started and following two overtimes and 110 minutes of spirited competition between these rivals, it was all squared at 1-1. UST scored its marker in the first half to go up 1-0 at the break and Mac tallied its goal in the 65th minute.
The match was hotly contested with equal scoring chances available for each team. Each side finished with 11 shots and five shots on net.
Macalester tallied its goal at 64:23 when
Cole Erickson ripped a blast from in close off the post and just inside the opposite side of the net. This was Erickson's first goal of the season and first of his Macalester career.
Dylan Wong (So. Clarksburg, Calif. / Jesuit) gained the assist on Erickson score.
Goalkeeper
Zeke Vainer (Fy., Melrose, Mass.) registered four saves on the night, as did the UST keeper.
"Give credit to St. Thomas,"said Mac coach
Gregg Olson. "I knew we'd have to weather the storm, but their pressure and play was incredible in the first 30 minutes of the game.
"We hammered out some details at half time which allowed us to settle the game in the second half and gain some possession of the ball. We regained our confidence, played better, and had some good looks on goal. Including the goal to tie it up at 1-1. Later in the game and in the closing minutes of regulation we very well could have won the game a few times.
"St. Thomas is a great opponent and a potential contender for the MIAC championship. That would have been a great MIAC win for us. But, I'm very proud of how we regained our game and for found the equalizing goal. Now we have to regroup to play a difficult Hamline team on Saturday at Hamline."
The Scots, who have sacrificed just one goal over their past four games, play Saturday (Sept. 21) at Hamline.
