Augsburg took the first game 12-7 and won a 2-1 pitcher's duel in the nightcap to spoil Macalester's MIAC-opener and home-opener Sunday at Nicholson Field.
The Auggies scored three runs in the second and four more in the top of the fourth inning to take command of the opening game 7-1 and held off despite three Mac tallies in each of the fifth and sixth innings. Macalester's
Sam Berk (Fy., Miami, Fla. / Palmer Trinity School) went 3-for-4 with a couple RBI,
Ross Bronfenbrenner (Jr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) was 2-for-4 with four RBI, and
Tom Forster (So., Stillwater, Minn.) contributed a pair of doubles and two runs scored.
Each team was held to five hits in game two. The difference was that Augsburg plated a couple runs in the top of the fourth while Macalester responded with only a single run in the bottom of the fifth.
Justin Kleschen (So., Evanston, Ill. / Evanston Township) pitched his best game of the year, walking just one batter in his complete game effort. Berk drove in Macalester's lone run.
Augsburg goes to 14-6 overall, 2-2 in the MIAC.
Macalester, now 7-14 overall and 0-2 in the MIAC, play conference road doubleheaders Tuesday (April 9) and Wednesday (April 10) as the Scots take on Bethel Tuesday and Gustavus Wednesday.
