Playing their fourth MIAC doubleheader in as many days, the Scots were swept by the Hamline Pipers at Midway Stadium, dropping a tough 7-6 ballgame in the opener and then falling 13-2 in the second game. Macalester will enjoy a two-day break before returning to its MIAC scheduled Wednesday (May 1) at home against St. John's.
Macalester led 3-1 in game one before Hamline took a one-run lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Scots tied the contest with a solo run in the fifth, but HU crossed the plate three times in the sixth to gain the lead for the second time, this time at 7-4. A two-out two-run homer by
Colin Carpenter (Jr., Harvard, Ill.) in the top of the seventh brought the Scots to within a run, but Hamline survived for the narrow win.
Four Scots produced two hits apiece: Carpenter,
Tom Forster (So., Stillwater, Minn.),
David Melms (Sr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) and
Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel).
Game two was all Hamline, which pounded out 16 hits.
The Scots are 9-20 on the season and 2-8 at the midway point of the MIAC schedule. The Pipers are 17-7 overall, 4-4 in MIAC play.
The Macalester vs. St. John's twinbill Wednesday starts at 2:30 p.m.
