Macalester hitters racked up 28 runs and 26 hits to sweep North Central (Minn.) 13-1 and 15-5 at the Metrodome, and will now head to Tucson, Arizona, for 10 games over Spring Break. The Scots were 26-for-65 (.400) hitting on the night.
Ross Bronfenbrenner (Jr., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) went 4-for-4 from his leadoff spot in game one, while and
Jordan Katz (Fy., Larchmont, N.Y. / Northfield Mount Hermon (Mass.)) and
Jimmy Belfont (Sr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) collected two hits each to lead a 14-hit Macalester attack. Starter
Nick Mar (So., Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchey) pitched the first three innings without giving up a hit or a walk in his first collegiate start.
Alex Isaacson (Jr., Gallatin, Tenn. / Pope John Paul II) also tossed three innings, while
Ben Saltzman (Fy., Roslyn, N.Y.) came in for the final frame.
Four Scots picked up a couple hits in the nightcap:
Jonathan Melms (Fy., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran),
Tom Forster (So., Stillwater, Minn.),
C.J. Smith (Jr., Ashland, Wis.) and
Joe Dobbins (Fy., Washington, D.C. / St. Alban's School). Melms scored four runs and Forster drove in three.
The game was tied at 4-4 entering the bottom of the fifth until
C.J. Smith (Jr. Ashland, WI / Ashland) started the rally with a triple to left field. The next two Scots made outs, but the Scots then sent ten consecutive batters to the plate to score eight runs on five hits in the inning.
Paul Schubring (Gilbert, Ariz. / Chandler Preparatory) picked up his first collegiate win after going 2 2/3 innings and striking out two while only giving up one run.
The Scots begin their 10-game Spring Break schedule Friday (March 15th) against North Park (Ill.).
