Football: Scots to host Wash U

Macalester plays host Saturday (Oct. 26) to Washington University in St. Louis in the first meeting between these two schools since 1977.  Kickoff is set for 12 noon.  Live webcast & Live Stats

Macalester looks to snap a three-game skid after losses to Mayville State, Carleton, and the University of Chicago. The Scots started strong last week in Chicago after a Samson Bialostok 62-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, but were outscored 13-0 in the fourth quarter before dropping the contest 26-7. Senior wide receiver John Johnson has been the top target for Bialostok this season. He has a team-leading 24 receptions for 367 yards and three touchdowns. Defensively, the Scots are led by sophomore Ryan Fleming's 59 tackles and one interception. Kicker Auburn Jimenez has had a strong senior campaign, converting 7-9 of his field goals and all 12 of his extra point attempts.

The Washington Bears are 4-2, having gained wins over Rhodes, Centre, Berry, and Hendrix, and are riding a three-game win streak. Their two losses have both been by ten points to nationally ranked teams, UW-Whitewater and Coe College. The Bears totaled 508 yards in their Oct. 5th victory vs. Berry and bettered their performance with 524 yards in a 45-41 victory at Hendrix on Oct. 12th. It marked the first time since the 2002 season that the Bears have recorded back to back games of over 500 yards of total offense. The offensive line has been the strength on the offensive side of the ball, ranking sixth in the nation by allowing only 0.33 sacks per game. Senior quarterback Eric Daginella has thrown for 831 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for four more scores this season.

One defense, the Bears have forced 14 turnovers, including a conference-best nine interceptions. They rank 24th in the country in interceptions and 26th in turnovers gained. Senior defensive end Nelson Nwumeh leads the Washington University defense with 45 tackle, including four tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks. Junior defensive back Ryan Bednar leads the secondary with a team-leading four interceptions.
