Anthony Calderon (Jr., St. Paul, Minn. / Cretin-Derham Hall) scored two goals, including the overtime game-winner, as Macalester snapped out of scoring slump to beat visiting Hamline 3-2 in double overtime Saturday night. The Scots hand first-year head coach
Gregg Olson his first collegiate head coaching victory.
The Scots have been playing some solid soccer through the season's first seven matches, especially on the defensive side, but came in with a 0-6-1 overall mark. On Saturday night, the team's offensive fortunes changed in a big was as Macalester compiled 29 shots, including 10 shots on goal.
Following a scoreless first half,
Dylan Wong (Fy., Clarksburg, Calif. / Jesuit) scored off assists from
Eric Dodd (Sr., Fort Madison, Ia.) and Robin Forlund (Jr., Madison, Wis. / Memorial) in the opening minute to put the Scots on the board. The Pipers responded with a score of their own just three minutes later as offensive play began to take over the match.
Ben Dugoni (Jr., Portland, Ore. / Oregon Episcopal) assisted on Calderon's first goal, a header off a cross, and Macalester was back on top 2-1 in the 68th minute. Once again, however, Hamline responded with a score of its own, this one coming at 87:59, to force overtime.
Midway through the second overtime session, a Forslund shot was deflected to Calderon, who took advantage of the opportunity to win the match.
Macalester is back in MIAC action Wednesday (Sept. 26) when it plays host to Carleton at 7:30 p.m.
