St. John's clinched second place in the MIAC when it used dominant pitching to defeat Macalester 7-2 and 2-1 Wednesday in Collegeville. The Scots close out the regular season at 19-20 overall and 9-11 in the MIAC.
The Scots were held to six hits in the first game and just one in the nightcap.
In the second game, SJU had two hits and Macalester none through the first five innings in this classic pitcher's duel. Macalester's
Garrett Salzman (Sr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) broke up Connor Cline's no-hit bid with a sixth-inning leadoff single.
Scott Foltz (Fy., St. Louis Park, Minn.) pinch-ran for Salzman and scored on a
Joe Famalette (Fy., Aliso Viejo, Calif. / Aliso Niguel) sacrifice fly to put the Scots up 1-0, but the Johnnies finally got to Mac starter
Chase Kahn (So., Cooper City, Fla. / American Heritage Plantation) in the bottom of the sixth, plating the tying and go-ahead runs to pull out the 2-1 win.
Kahn allowed six hits in his six innings on the mound, striking out five. One of SJU's two sixth-inning tallies was unearned. Kahn batted out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning before taking control over the next four frames.
Game one was not as close as the Johnnies scored four times in their half of the first innings, three of them unearned, and were never threatened.
