Scots and UW-Superior split again

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

Macalester and Wisconsin-Superior played a second Metrodome doubleheader on the young season after meeting a week ago, and once again the twinbill ended in a split.

The bats were alive in the opener, with the Scots pulling out a 10-9 win after surrendering an 8-3 lead.  There were 25 hits on the game.  The nightcap was another story, as the pitchers controlled the game before UW-Superior scored eight extra inning runs in the top of the eighth for an 8-0 win.

Macalester now heads to the Phoenix area for 10 Spring Break games March 9-16.

Wisconsin-Superior broke an 8-8 deadlock with a single run in the bottom of the fifth inning in game one, but the Scots came back with the tying and winning runs in the top of the seventh.  Nick Mar (Fy., Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchy) drove in the tying run on a pinch-hit single and after a Ross Bronfenbrenner (So., San Anselmo, Calif. / Marin Academy) pinch-hit double, scored the winning run on a Graham Brown (Sr., Annandale, Minn.) sacrifice fly.

Jimmy Belfont (Jr., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel), who ignited the winning rally with a one-out single, was 3-for-4 on the game with two RBI.  CJ Smith (So., Ashland, Wis.) drove in a pair of runs and scored twice.

Nick Meerson (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) pitched two scoreless innings of relief to pick up his second win in two appearances.

Macalester pitchers Smith, Roberto Capriotti (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa. / Upper St. Clair) and Nathan Keller-Crew (So., Cool, Calif. / Golden Sierra)  didn't allow a run while surrendering just five hits through the first seven innings, but the Scots were unable to come up with the run they needed to hand head coach Matt Parrington his 200th victory at Macalester.

The Phoenix trip starts March 9 with a doubleheader against Coe (Ia.).
