Nathan Kelleher-Crew (So. Cool, Calif. / Golden Sierra) pitched six scoreless innings in relief, and
David Melms (Jr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) doubled and scored in the top of the 12th frame as Macalester out-lasted Bethany Lutheran 9-8 at the Metrodome.
Because the first game of the scheduled doubleheader with over 3 1/2 hours, the second game was not played. There were 33 hits, including 12 for extra bases, in the game that was played. The teams combined to strand 27 runners on base.
The Scots are now 7-8 on the season, while the Vikings are 7-9.
Bethany Lutheran scored three first-inning runs before the Scots came back with three to tie things up in the third and three more runs in the next inning. Macalester led 7-4 before the Vikings re-gained the lead at 8-7 with four run in the bottom of the sixth.
In the seventh, the Scots forced extra innings when
Nick Mar (Fy., Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchy) singled and scored on an RBI pinch-hit single by
Tom Forster (Fy., Stillwater, Minn.).
Kelleher-Crew struck out five and gave up five hits in his 6+ relief frames to pick up the win.
Chase Kahn (So., Cooper City, Fla. / American Heritage Plantation) pitched most of the bottom of the 12th to collect his first save.
Macalester is back at the Metrodome Friday (March 23) for a pair of games with Northwestern (Ia.) at 7 a.m.
