Macalester vs. Rutgers-Newark box score
After starting out with two wins in Clermont, Fla., the Macalester softball team dropped two games on Wednesday, falling to Mount Ida (Mass.), 6-2, and Rutgers-Newark (N.J.), 4-3.
Cleo Nagy (So., Eugene, Ore. / Henry D. Sheldon) led the Scots on the day going 3-for-8 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Hali Englert (Fy., Castle Rock, Colo. / Castle View) also went 2-for-6 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.
In the first game vs. Mount Ida, the Scots headed into the top of the seventh inning down just 3-2, but gave up three runs off of three hits and two errors and found themselves down 6-2. Macalester was unable to answer back and suffered just its second loss of the season.
Amanda Knopf (Sr., Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) and
Erin Slater (Fy., Federal Way, Wash. / Decatur) also added hits in the first matchup of the day.
Knopf pitched all seven innings for the Scots and struck out five batters.
The second game of the day vs. Rutgers-Newark was a defensive battle with the decision coming down to the seventh inning. Macalester was down 3-2 when Nagy doubled to send
Allie Dautrich (So., Mansfield Center, Conn. / E.O. Smith) home for the game's tying run. Three runs wasn't enough though, as Monica Bagan hit a triple with two outs left to end the game and hand the Scots their third loss of the season.
Other hitters in the second included Slater and
Katie Fuller (So., Boulder, Colo. / Boulder) who both came up with doubles and
Amanda Knopf who went 2-for-4.
Miranda Stokes (Fy., Perry, Utah / Box Elder )pitched five innings for Macalester striking out four batters and giving up just one earned run.
The Scots look to get back on track Thursday as they take on Hood (Md.) at 10:30 a.m. and Westfield State (N.Y.) at 12:30 p.m.
