RIVER FALLS, Wis. – The Macalester College softball team played a non-conference doubleheader at UW-River Falls, losing the first game 8-0 before coming back in the second game to win, 2-1 in eight innings Saturday afternoon at Perkins Field. The results give the Scots a 9-9 record on the season, while the Falcons are now 7-14.
In the first game, Macalester drew eight walks but only managed two hits. The Scots put runners in scoring position in four of the five innings but were unable to register the key hit. UW-River Falls scored single runs in the first two innings before pushing three and two runs across in the third and fourth innings, respectively. The game ended when the Falcons scored an unearned run on an error in the bottom of the fifth.
Junior
Tess Bojorquez (San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente) and sophomore
Ally Wolf (Valencia, Calif./Valencia) recorded the hits for Macalester.
The second game started off in similar fashion as the first, with the Scots struggling to score and UW-River Ralls scoring a run in the second inning for a 1-0 lead. Macalester tallied its first run of the day in the top of the fifth inning, with junior
Alli Johnson (Waukee, Iowa/Northwest) leading off the inning with a solo home run to left. It was her team-leading third homer of the season. Sophomore
Safiya Butler (St. Louis, Mo./Whitfield School) followed with a single and was bunted to second by junior
Martha Miller (Medford, Wis./Medford). After a flyout, Bojorquez singled to right. Butler tried to score from second but was thrown out, leaving the game tied at 1-1.
Neither team scored over the next two-plus innings, sending the game to extra innings. With Miller placed on second, junior
Elizabeth Welch (Carol Stream, Ill./Glenbard North) bunted Miller to third. Bojorquez hit a sacrifice fly to left that brought home Miller for a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Miller induced a popped-up bunt and a foul out. After an error extended the inning, a groundout ended the game.
Miller pitched all eight innings, limiting the Falcons to an unearned run on seven hits while striking out eight batters without a walk. She also led the offense with two hits. Butler, Bojorquez, Johnson and junior
Callia Holland (Akron, Ohio/Hawken) also had hits for the Scots.
Macalester begins MIAC play on Monday, March 30 against St. Scholastica in the Scots' home opener. The doubleheader, which was originally scheduled to be played on Wednesday in Duluth, begins at 4:30 p.m. at the Macalester Softball Complex.
