Campaign begins with split against UW-Superior at Metrodome

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
The 2012 baseball season got underway with a doubleheader against Wisconsin-Superior at the Metrodome.  Macalester won the opener 5-1 behind a solid starting pitching effort from Nick Meerson (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake), but UW-Superior held off a late Macalester threat to take game two 7-5.

Meerson tossed the first five innings of the opener, giving up no runs and just two hits while striking out six.  Meanwhile, his teammates scored once in the first and third innings and three more times in the bottom of the fifth.

Robert Williams (Sr., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) singled in Mitch Glasser (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Latin School) in the first, while Macalester went up 2-0 when Glasser drove in a run on a ground out, scoring David Melms (Jr., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran).  The Scots had four hits in the fifth inning, scoring on an RBI double by Glasser, a run-producing single by Williams, and a sacrifice fly by Garrett Salzman (Sr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis).

In two relief innings, Chase Kahn (So., Cooper City, Fla. / American Heritage Plantation) fanned four batters.

Glasser, Williams and Graham Brown (Sr., Annandale, Minn.) collected a couple hits apiece.

A Salzman RBI single and Nick Mar (Fy., Sacramento, Calif. / McClatchy) run-scoring double put the Scots up 2-0 in the top of the first frame in the nightcap, but the Yellow Jackets took command with five second-inning runs.  Macalester stayed within striking distance and in the seventh plated two runs to get to within two, but left the bases full.

On the night, Williams went 5-for-7 from the plate with six RBI and Brown went 3-for-5 with a pair of walks from his leadoff spot.  Macalester pitchers struck out 18 batters in 13 innings.  The relievers fanned 11 in seven frames while not walking anyone.

The Scots play another twinbill with UW-Superior next Monday (March 5) at the Metrodome at 9:45 p.m.
