Georgia Cloepfil (Jr., Portland, Ore. / Lincoln) broke a 1-1 tie, scoring from long-range from an extreme angle in the 76th minute, and Macalester held on to defeat visiting St. Thomas 2-1. The Scots stay in the race for an MIAC playoff spot, improving to 3-3-1 in conference play and 7-5-1 overall.
It didn't take long for Macalester to establish control as
Bonnie Gale (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska / South Anchorage) netted her sixth goal of the season on a
Lydia Chodosh (Fy., Los Angeles, Calif. / Culver City) pass just 2:54 after the opening kickoff. The Tommies, however, gained some control and deadlocked the score with a goal in the 39th minute.
Macalester enjoyed a consistent attack and strong defensive play until breaking the tie at 75:07 when
Margaret Nemetz (So., Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) assisted on Cloepfil's bomb from just off the end line. Cloepfil reaches double digits with her 10th score of the campaign.
The Scots enjoyed a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal and 19-7 in total shots. Mac avenges a 2-1 setback to the Tommies a year ago when UST netted the game-winner late in the second half.
Ellen Palmquist (Jr., Fort Collins, Colo. / Poudre) and
Rosie Glenn-Finer (Sr., San Francisco, Calif. / Lick-Wilmerding) once again split the goalkeeping duties, with Palmquist recording two saves and Glenn-Finer posting one.
St. Thomas falls to 4-7-1 overall and 3-4-1 overall.
The Scots face another big MIAC test Friday (Oct. 12) when they play host to St. Olaf at 4 p.m.
