Macalester won for the fourth time in five games, defeating St. Mary's 5-1 on a rainy night in Winona. The Scots improve to 9-6-1 overall and 5-4-1 in the MIAC, and stay alive in the race for the four-team conference playoffs.
After leading 1-0 at halftime on an
Izzi Speer (Jr., Madison, Wis. / West) goal, the Scots received second half scores from
Hannah Boston (Sr., Mill Valley, Calif. / Tamalpais),
Georgia Cloepfil (Jr., Portland, Ore. / Lincoln) (twice) and
Rachel Lochner (Sr., Eagan, Minn. / Visitation). Speer, Boston and Lochner tallied their first goals of the season. Gaining assists were Speer, Cloepfil and
Hannah Pollard-Garber (Fy., Rockville, Md. / Thomas Sprigg Wootton).
The Scots enjoyed a 24-8 advantage in total shots and 8-3 in shots on net.
For Macalester to have a chance of getting into the post-season, it must beat Gustavus Saturday (Oct. 27) in the regular-season standings and also get some help in this tight race. Concordia is already in, and fighting for the other three positions are St. Benedict (6-3-1), Augsburg (5-3-2), Bethel (5-3-2), St. Olaf (5-3-2), Macalester (5-4-1) and St. Thomas (4-4-2). The matches that will decide the playoff field include: Mac at Gustavus, Concordia at St. Ben's, Carleton at St. Olaf, Bethel at St. Thomas, and St. Mary's at Augsburg.
