Seventh inning run gives Scots split at St. John’s

Macalester vs. St. John's box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

After getting shut out for the first time since their spring break trip to Arizona, the Scots came back to beat St. John's in game two 3-2 in Collegeville. Macalester is 23-12 overall and 14-4 in the MIAC, and stand tied for first with St. Thomas for the top spot in the conference standings.

The Johnnies won the first game 5-0 behind a four-hit shutout performance by ace Brett Kramer. SJU tallied its five runs on six hits and clinches the fourth and final spot in next weekend's MIAC playoffs, joining Macalester, St. Thomas and Hamline.

Macalester can clinch at least a tie for the MIAC crown if it gets two wins tomorrow against Concordia-Moorhead.  This doubleheader will be played at Dick Putz Field in St. Cloud. If the Scots win both, they will be MIAC champs or co-champs for the first time since 1950.

After St. John's tied the nightcap 2-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, the Scots brought in reliever Chase Kahn (Fy., Cooper City, Fla. / American Heritage Plantation) in the top of the fourth with a runner on base. Kahn proceeded to mow down the Johnnies, going the final four frames without surrendering a hit or a walk. He faced 13 batters, with the only batter reaching first getting their on an error.

Macalester broke the tie with the game-winning run in the top of the seventh. Mitch Glasser (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) singled for his third hit of the game to start the rally. Pinch-runner David Melms (So., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) moved into scoring position on a Garrett Salzman (Jr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) single and scored on a game-winning RBI single by Colin Carpenter (Fy., Harvard, Ill.).
