After beating St.John's with a ninth-inning rally, Macalester played St. Thomas on a cold and wet night in an elimination game for both conference co-champs at the MIAC Tournament at Minnetonka's Veterans Field. The Scots led 7-5 after plating three runs in the top of the sixth inning in this back-and-forth affair, but the Tommies responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth and eighth frames to win 11-7 and keep their hopes alive.
St. Thomas plays Hamline tomorrow and must beat the Pipers twice to claim the MIAC playoff crown.
St. Thomas led 2-0 after one inning and 3-1 after two before the Scots tied the game in the top of the third.
Graham Brown (Jr., Annandale, Minn.) led off with a single and Andrew Gardiner (Fy., Hanover, N.H.) followed by drawing a walk. They moved up on a sacrifice bunt, with Brown scoring on a passed ball and Gardiner coming across on an RBI ground out.
UST re-claimed the advantage with a pair of runs in the fourth to go up 5-3. Again, the Scots battled back, cutting the margin in half in the fifth when Brown walked and Gardiner doubled him to third, setting up another RBI ground out.
Macalester then took control with three sixth-inning runs to go on top 7-5.
Will Chen (Sr., Edina, Minn.) singled to lead off the inning and
Colin Carpenter (Fy., Harvard, Ill.) followed with a walk. Both came in to score on a
Bobby De Meulenaere (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) ground-rule double to center.
Jimmy Belfont (Fy., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) singled in De Meulenaere for the third run of the inning.
However, UST had an answer ready in the bottom of the inning with a two-out rally to regain the lead. The Tommies stayed in control the rest of the way, keeping the Scots off the board the rest of the way and using three eighth-inning insurance runs to finish off Macalester.
