Scots split one-run games with Hamline

Macalester vs. Hamline box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

Mitch Glasser (Jr., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) pitched himself into and out of a two-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the eighth inning and then drove in the game-winner on a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth as the Scots gained an MIAC split with visiting Hamline. The Scots scored twice in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to force extra innings.

Hamline took game one 3-2 and Mac's victory in the second game way by an 8-7 tally.

The Scots are now 3-1 in the early-season MIAC standings and 8-8 overall. Mac has won extra-inning affairs each of the past two days, having topped Augsburg in 10 frames Tuesday. Hamline is 4-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play.

Glasser was 5-for-7 on the day, improving his average on the season to .393, to lead Macalester. Collecting four hits each were Robert Williams (Jr., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) and Will Chen (Sr., Edina, Minn.). With an 8-for-15 start to the conference season, Chen is now batting .371 on the campaign.  C.J. Smith (Fy., Ashland, Wis.) blasted a three-run homer early in the second game for his first collegiate round tripper.

Led by game one starter Elliott Yodh (Sr., Merion, Pa. / Lower Merion), game one reliever Eric Robinson (Sr., San Francisco, Calif. / The Urban School) and game two reliever Nathan Kellerher-Crew (Fy., Cool, Calif. / Golden Sierra), Mac pitchers allowed just 15 hits in 15 innings of work.

The second game of the twinbill was a back-and-forth affair. Hamline led 2-0 early before Smith's shot to right made it 3-2 Macalester. The Pipers then took command with four runs in the top of the third to go 6-3. Mac chipped away with solo runs in the third and fifth innings to get within a run as Kellerher-Crew was strong out of the bullpen.

Hamline added an insurance run in the top of the seventh before the Scots forced extra innings with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning, even though they left the bases loaded. Glasser's two-out game-winning hit scored Graham Brown (Jr., Annandale, Minn.), who singled and moved into scoring position on a Chen single.

The Scots (3-1) trail just St. Olaf (4-0) in the early-season MIAC standings. They host Wisconsin-Superior for a pair of non-conference twinbills Saturday and Sunday (April 9-10). Saturday's games start at 1 p.m. at Dunning Field near Concordia-St. Paul University and Sunday's doubleheader begins at 12 noon Sunday at Nicholson Field.
