Ingram, Robinson pitch Scots to sweep over Gusties

Playing for the first time in nine days, Macalester picked up where it left off, sweeping visiting Gustavus 4-3 and 3-2 as the Scots are now 10-2 over their past 12 games.

Alex Ingram (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Morgan Park Academy) pitched the Scots to the win in the opener and Eric Robinson (Sr., San Francisco, Calif. / The Urban School) pitched the team to a 3-2 triumph in the nightcap. Both Mac seniors improve to 5-0 on the year.

The Scots improve to 15-9 and their 7-1 MIAC record keeps them on top of the MIAC standings. Gustavus drops to 5-16 overall, 3-7 in the MIAC.

In the first game, each team scored twice on four hits in the opening inning, and both tallied single runs in the third. The score remained deadlocked at 3-3 before Macalester plated the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh. David Melms (So., Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wisconsin Lutheran) started the rally with a leadoff infield hit. Jimmy Belfont (So., Olney, Md. / Our Lady of Good Counsel) singled and with two outs, Graham Brown (Jr., Annandale, Minn.) provided a walk-off single up the middle.

Melms and Belfont had two hits apiece. The Scots also received RBI hits from Colin Carpenter (Fy., Harvard, Ill.), Andrew Gardiner (Fy., Hanover, N.H.) and Bobby De Meulenaere (Sr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove).

Robinson held Gustavus off the board through six frames, extending his scoreless streak to 19 2/3 innings. He surrendered just three hits in the first six innings. Macalester scored twice in the opening inning, and added a key insurance run in the bottom of the sixth. DeMeulenaere drove in a pair of runs and Robert Williams (Jr., ) also had an RBI.

Macalester's next three conference twinbills are on the road, starting with a pair of games Saturday (April 23) at Carleton. At 7-1 in the MIAC, the Scots have a one-game lead over Hamline (7-3) and St. John's (7-3).
