Macalester vs. St. Mary's statistics
Georgia Cloepfil (So., Portland, Ore. / Lincoln) scored off a corner kick 30 minutes into the match and the Scots held off some late St. Mary's chances to beat the Cardinals 1-0 on Kick Cancer Night at Macalester Stadium.
Macalester moves forward to 6-3-1 in the MIAC with its seventh conference shutout and stays in the chase for a berth in the four-team post-season league playoffs. The Scots can qualify for the post-season if they win their regular-season finale Saturday (Oct. 29) at home against Gustavus Adolphus.
Mac improves to 10-6-1 and reaches double-digits in the win column for the 22nd time in 23 years. All 10 Macalester wins, as well as the tie, have been shutouts. This was the team's eighth 1-0 victory.
The Scots out-shot their guests 9-7 and led 6-3 in shots on goal. Macalester led 6-2 in corner kicks, collecting the game-winner at 30:00 on a corner delivered by
Margaret Nemetz (Fy., Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer). Cloepfil accounted for three of her team's six tries on net. Her goal was her second of the year.
Rosie Glenn-Finer (Jr., San Francisco, Calif. / Lick Wilmerding) turned aside all three SMU shots on goal to lower her goals against average to 0.71.
St. Mary's drops to 3-13 overall, 1-9 in the MIAC.
Kickoff for Saturday's match with the Gusties is set for 1 p.m. If the Scots win, they will make it to the MIAC post-season for the eighth time in the nine-year history or the league playoffs. Every MIAC team has one match remaining. Having already clinched a spot are St. Benedict (8-1-1), Carleton (7-2-1)) and Concordia (6-1-3). Fighting for the final berth are Mac (6-3-1 - 19 points), St. Olaf (5-3-2 - 17 points) and Augsburg (5-4-1 - 16 points).
