Looking to move up in the conference standings over the second half of the league schedule, Macalester beat Carleton 3-1 in the first game of a home doubleheader Sunday afternoon, but had to settle for its fourth straight MIAC split as the Knights came back to take the nightcap 8-3.
The Scots are now 17-13-1 overall and 4-8 in the MIAC, while the Knights are 10-21 on the season, 6-8 in the league, with their sixth straight conference split.
James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) improved to 7-3 on the season (26-12 for his career) by giving up just five hits, striking out eight batters and walking only one in Mac's 3-1 game one victory.
Macalester went up 2-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) led off with a single, went to second on a bunt, and scored the game's first run on an RBI single by
Garrett Salzman (So., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis). Salzman stole second and crossed the plate on a
Bobby De Meulenaere (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) single.
The Scots added an insurance run in the sixth when Glasser singled, stole second, and scored on a
Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) RBI double.
Mac led 3-0 after two innings in the second contest but was held in check the rest of the way. Carleton, meanwhile, scored twice in the third, once in the fourth to tie it up, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth.
The Scots return to the field Tuesday (April 27) when they host St. John's in a 2:30 p.m. twinbill.
