Macalester wins in 10 innings to gain split with Concordia

Macalester vs. Concordia box scores: Game 1 | Game 2

After dropping the 11 a.m. opener 10-5, Macalester came back with an 8-7 win in 10 innings in the afternoon contest to gain an MIAC split at home with first-place Concordia-Moorhead.

Each team plated two runs in the eighth inning after the score was sent into extra frames and in the bottom of the 10th, two hits, a throwing error, and a dropped pop up with two outs gave the Scots the victory.  Bobby De Meulenaere (Jr., Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) provided two doubles and a triple and Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview) hit his third home run of the season.

Saturday's first game was almost all Concordia, which didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and by that time the score was 7-0. Down 10-0 going into the final frame, Macalester tallied five runs on three hits and three Cobber errors.

Macalester played much better in an exciting game two, which was tied at 2-2 and 5-5, and then again at 7-7 after the regulation seven innings. There were 29 hits and 18 runners left stranded on base.

In the bottom of the eighth, after Concordia went up by a pair of runs in the top half of the inning, the Scots responded with a De Meulenaere double and pinch hit Robert Engel (Sr., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) single to start the inning. Graham Brown (So., Annandale, Minn.) pulled a double to left, scoring De Meulenaere. The Scots tied things up on a wild pitch, but left a pair of runners on base.

In the 10th and final inning, Brown and Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School) had two-out singles, and advanced to second and third on a Concordia throwing error on Glasser's hit. Just when it appeared that the contest was moving to the 11th, Concordia's sixth error on the day allowed Brown to plate the winner.

James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) came out of the bullpen to start the fifth inning with his team on top 5-2. He ended up putting in a full day's work, pitching six innings to improve to 6-2 on the year.

Mac is now 14-11-1 on the season, 2-6 in the MIAC, while Concordia is 15-10 overall and 6-2 in league play.
