Scots denied third straight sweep

Macalester improved to 5-0 on the young season by beating Wisconsin-Superior 9-3 in the first game of a Monday afternoon Metrodome doubleheader in Minneapolis, but was handed a 6-0 defeat in the nightcap for its first loss of the year.

Garrett Salzman (Sr., Glendale, Calif. / St. Francis) connected for for a three-run shot for his first collegiate home run to highlight a five-run fourth inning in the opener, while Nick Meerson (So., Los Angeles, Calif. / Harvard-Westlake) and James Murrey (Sr., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) split the pitching duties.

After scoring five fifth-inning runs to go up 6-2, Macalester clinched its fifth straight win to start the season by adding three more runs in the six to ice the game. Meerson worked the first frames on the mound, allowing only two hits and a run, while Murrey pitched the final three innings to break the school record for career wins with 21.

Joining Salzman with two hits on the game were Devin English (Sr., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha), Mitch Glasser (So., Chicago, Ill. / The Latin School), and Robert Williams (So., West Covina, Calif. / Northview).

UW-Superior held the Scots to just two hits in game two.

Macalester (5-1) travels to the Phoenix area over Spring Break for 10 games March 12-19.
