Macalester vs. Augsburg statistics
Macalester produced one of its top performances of the season in a game which was up for graps at the end, but Augsburg held on for a 71-68 thriller over the Scots in Minneapolis. The final six minutes were close as the Augsburg lead was at four points or less the rest of the way, including just one point with :54 to play before the hosts put it away with a pair of free throws.
The Scots enjoyed an advantage in turnovers, points off turnovers (21-12) and offensive rebounds, and went 8-for-19 on three-point tries (63%). Macalester led 21-12 in points off turnovers and 24-13 in bench scoring.
Pierce Peters (Fy., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) had a big game for the Scots, finishing with 18 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double, as well as picking up four assists and a couple steals. He was 3-for-5 from behind the arc.
Andy Bowman (Fy., Perry, Kan. / Perry – Lecompton) scored 11 points, while
Kyle Hamblett (Jr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) and
Colin Jarvis (Fy., Madison, Wis. / East) added nine points each.
Jon Cassens pumped in 18 points and handed out eight assists, and David Olson finished with 16 points to pace the Auggies.
The Auggies took command with an 18-5 lead nine minutes into the contest before the Scots come back to get to within a point at 23-22 at 5:28 and two points at 29-27 on a Jarvis three-pointer at 2:49 of the opening half. Augsburg closed out the half with a 9-2 run to go up 38-29 at the intermission.
Peters took control in the second half with 13 points, six boards and three assists, and Macalester fought back, rallying from at 12-point deficit to give the Auggies all they could handle. The Scots went on a 15-4 run to cut the deficit to a single point at 60-59 with 5:08 to play, closing the rally with a Jarvis three.
However, Augsburg held on to a lead of between one and four points the rest of the way. Jarvis nailed another three-pointer with :54 left to get Mac to within a point a6 69-69.
The Scots are back at it Wednesday (Feb. 10) when they host Concordia-Moorhead at 7:45 p.m.
