Macalester vs. St. John's statistics
The Scots played a strong first half and were tied with St. John's 40-40 at the break Monday night at the Leonard Center, but their bid for victory came up short when third-place St. John's held Macalester down in the second period and went on for an 81-63 decision over the upset-minded home team.
The Johnnies move to within a game of second place in the MIAC standings.
Mac went out on top 19-10 at the 13:26 mark of the opening period, but the rest of the half was close. The Scots also rallied with a 12-2 run late in the half to go up by four points before SJU deadlocked the score at the break.
The game remained close and was knotted at 48-48 at the 16:41 mark of the second period. That's when St. John's, however, strung together 12 unanswered points to go up 60-48. The margin grew 20 points at 71-51 with six minutes remaining.
Four Scots reached double digits in scoring, led by a season-high 14 points in 19 minutes off the bench by
Colin Jarvis (Fy., Madison, Wis. / West). Jarvis nailed 4-of-7 from behind the three-point arc.
Kyle Hamblett (Jr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) added 13 points, going 3-for-5 on threes.
Pierce Peters (Fy., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) had 11 to go along with nine boards and four assists, and
Andy Bowman (Fy., Perry, Kan. / Perry – Lecompton) finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists.
St. John's shot 54% and received 17 points each from Andy Burns and Todd Herman. Sam Blank and Nermin Hujdurovic contributed 12 points apiece and David Redfield handed out six assists.
Macalester out-rebounded SJU 29-26 and each team had 15 assists. The Johnnies enjoyed a 31-9 advantage in free throw attempts.
After playing four straight home games, the Scots travel to St. Peter Wednesday (Feb. 3) to take on the MIAC second-place team, Gustavus Adolphus.
