Macalester vs. St. Olaf statistics
All-conference and all-region defender
Nate Juergens (Sr., St. Paul, Minn. / Como Park) scored off a set piece early in the second half and Macalester posted its fourth shutout in five games to topple St. Olaf 1-0 in Northfield. The Scots, who have sacrificed only eight goals in 15 games, stay in the thick of the race for the league title at 5-2 and improve to 11-3-1 overall.
The game-winning free kick by Juergens, his first score of the season, came from about 40 yards into the right side of the net as the St. Olaf keeper was screened away from a good look at the long shot by Mac forward
Taylor Rasmussen (So., Eagan, Minn. / Eastview).
Matt Weyer (Jr., Cedarburg, Wis.) stopped three St. Olaf shots on goal to earn his fifth shutout in eight starts. Weyer is 7-0-1 on the season with a stellar 0.24 goals against average.
The Scots out-shot the Oles 11-5, including 4-3 in tries on goal. Mac earned a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. St. Olaf drops to 5-5-5 on the year, 2-2-4 in conference play.
The race for the league championship is very tight. Through Saturday's games, Macalester is 5-2. Carleton and Concordia are both 6-2-1, Augsburg is 4-2-1 and St. John's is 3-2-2. If the Scots win their three remaining contests, they will be MIAC champs. With two wins and a tie, they can do no worse than a co-championship.
Macalester returns to action next Friday (Oct. 22) with a match at St. Thomas.
