Scots fall to hot-shooting Pipers

Hamline was sizzling from outside throughout the day, nailing 12-of-17 from behind the three-point arc and finishing with a 62% shooting figure overall, to beat Macalester 84-57 Saturday at the Leonard Center. The Pipers went 32-for-52 from the floor.

The Scots forced a season-best 21 turnovers and hustled for 19 steals – by far a season high. Holden Bigler-Johnson (Jr., Austin, Tex. / Anderson) collected five thefts, while Pierce Peters (Fy., Glenwood, Minn. / Minnewaska Area) added four. Picking up three steals apiece off the bench were Colin Jarvis (Fy., Madison, Wis. / West) and Nic Lechault (Fy., Geneva, Switzerland / International School of Geneva).

The first half of the opening period was closely played and Macalester was within five points at 19-14 with 8:10 to go. That's when Hamline, however, began a 20-6 rally to go up by 19 points with three minutes left in the half. A 45-28 halftime lead grew to 27 points with 13:24 to go.

Three Scots reached double digits in scoring, led by Kyle Hamblett (Jr., Paris, France / American School of Paris) and Peters with 13 points each. Jerry Kraus (Sr., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral – Colo.) scored 10 to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Bigler-Johnson handed out four assists to go along with his five steals.

Ray Brown, Victor Easter and Levi Wenrich all handed out five assists to lead the way for Hamline. Brandon Rieg scored 17 points, while Brown and Dan Anderson each added 14 points. Carl Hipp had eight rebounds and three blocks. The Pipers are in the thick of the battle for the third-place position in the MIAC standings and are now 11-6 on the season and 7-5 in the conference.

Mac plays the second of its four consecutive home games when it hosts Bethel Wednesday (Jan. 27) at 7:30 p.m.
