Macalester and host-Augsburg, a couple of teams who tied for third place in last year's MIAC standings, played 110 minutes of scoreless soccer Saturday night in Minneapolis as the Auggies held off several overtime opportunities by the Scots to earn the tie. The Scots are now 5-2-1 on the season and 1-1-1 in the MIAC. Augsburg is 2-3-3 overall, 0-2-1 in league play.
The first and second halves were closely contested, with Macalester goalkeeper
Tressa Versteeg (Jr., Pella, Ia.) and Augsburg's Diana Bocklund keeping their teams alive. The Scots, however, dominated the two 10-minute OT periods, forcing to Bocklund to make five saves, including three on
Maddy Cochrane (Sr., Grand Marais, Minn. / Cook County) shots.
Emily Bardwell (Jr., Denver, Colo. / East) had five shots on net for Mac and Cochrane had three on the night.
Augsburg's keeper turned away Cochrane shots on goal in the 96th minute, 99th minute and 104th minute, and on Bardwell with just 2:35 to play. Versteeg picks up her third shutout of the campaign.
Macalester faces another big MIAC challenge when it hosts Carleton next Wednesday (Oct. 30) at 7:30 p.m.
