Another late Gorecki goal lifts Scots past No. 15 Augsburg; Mullaney gets shutout

Macalester vs. Augsburg statistics

Macalester knocked off No. 15-ranked Augsburg 1-0 on a late Carson Gorecki (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) header as the Scots improve to 2-0 in the MIAC with a win on the home field. Goalkeeper Mark Mullaney (Jr., Plymouth, Minn. / Robbinsdale Armstrong) turned away eight Augsburg shots on goal to post the shutout. The Scots have won three games in a row and improve to 4-3-1 overall, while the Auggies sink to 5-2-1 on the year, 1-2 in the MIAC.

Gorecki, who has netted four second half tie-breaking, game-winning goals over the team's past five games, got his head on a Stephen Murphy-Logue (Jr., Anchorage, Ak. / West) and beat the keeper with just 1:48 remaining in the second half. He also headed in the game-winner last weekend over Central.  With 24 career tallies, Gorecki ties M Club Hall of Famer Matt Jackson '92 for the No. 8 spot on Mac's all-time scoring list.

Mullaney was a standout in net for the Scots, and his eight saves gave him his second shutout of the season. He lowers is goals against average to 1.15.

Augsburg is ranked second in the NCAA Division III North Region and is a national playoff team from a year ago. The Auggies beat the Scots 4-0 a year ago to finish with a third-place 7-2-1 and are one of the MIAC favorites this year.

Macalester had 12 shots on the night, including three apiece for Gorecki and Murphy-Logue.

Mac is one of three MIAC teams off to first-place 2-0 starts, along with St. Olaf and Gustavus.

The Scots play their next six matches on the road as the team's challenging schedule continues. Mac heads to Iowa this weekend to play Saturday (Sept. 26) at Grinnell and Sunday at Simpson for its fifth and sixth match this year against teams from the Hawkeye State.  The Scots resume MIAC play next Wednesday (Sept. 30) at Carleton.  Macalester won't play at home again until Oct. 17.
