Weyer shuts out Central

Macalester vs. Central statistics | Video clips from the match: Gorecki's goal | the Mac fans

Goalkeeper Matt Weyer (So., Cedarburg, Wis.) turned away eight shots on goal and Carson Gorecki (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) scored his third second-half game-winning goal in a week as Macalester won an exciting 1-0 match over Central (Ia.) on a warm Friday night in St. Paul.

The Scots improve to 3-3-1, while the Dutch drop to 3-2.

Gorecki, who beat UW-Platteville and Concordia-Moorhead in the past seven days with late tie-breaking scores, netted his 23rd career goal and third of the season 14 minutes into the second half on a Jesse Geary (So., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) assist. Gorecki accounted for four of his team's six shots on net.

That was the only score of the match despite 35 shots, 14 shots on goal and six corner kicks. Central out-shot the host team 19-16 and owned an 8-6 lead in shots on the net. Weyer's eight saves brought him his second career shutout.

Macalester has been playing top-quality opponents throughout the early part of the schedule and has one of its most challenging matches of the year when No. 14-ranked Augsburg crosses the river for an MIAC match Wednesday (Sept. 23) at Macalester Stadium. The Auggies are rated second to Loras (Ia.) in the North Region and are one of the favorites to take the MIAC crown.
