Macalester vs. Wisconsin-Platteville statistics
Stephen Murphy-Logue (Jr., Anchorage, Ak. / West)) and
Carson Gorecki (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) netted second half goals to lead Macalester to a 2-1 come-from-behind win over a strong Wisconsin-Platteville team Saturday night in Platteville. The Pioneers, an NCAA Division III second-round playoff team a year ago and a team coming off a tie against No. 4 Loras (Ia.), went on top in the 61st minute, but could not survive Macalester's comeback.
Macalester goalkeeper
Matt Weyer (So., Cedarburg, Wis.) turned away five of six UWP shots on goal to lead the defensive effort as Mac won despite a 15-10 Platteville lead in shots and 7-2 margin in corners.
Coming off a tie and a pair of hard-fought defeats, the Scots gain their initial victory of the year and move to 1-2-1 on the year. The Pioneers are now 2-1-1.
UW-Platteville went up with a Chris Brown tally in the 61st minute. However, Murphy-Logue drilled in his first goal of the season at 68:32 as the Scots were back in the game.
Nate Juergens (Jr., St. Paul, Minn. / Como Park) assisted on Murphy-Logue's goal.
Jesse Geary (So., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) passed to Gorecki, who netted his first goal since the '07 season and 21st in his Macalester career, on a chip shot from 10 yards out at 84:23. Gorecki, an All-MIAC forward, missed last year with an injury.
Macalester faces a major challenge tomorrow. The Scots take the bus tonight to Dubuque, Iowa, and will take on No. 4 at 2:30 p.m. Loras has made the NCAA Division III semi-finals in each of the past two seasons.
