Lauryn Gutierrez (Jr., Hickory, N.C. / St. Stephen's) broke a scoreless tie in the 74th minute with the game's only goal as Macalester won a 1-0 decision over visiting Luther (Ia.) to get the '09 campaign off to a winning start. Gutierrez's game-winner was assisted by Rose Holdorf (Jr., Corvallis, Ore. / Crescent Valley).

Macalester out-shot the Norse 17-8 and received five saves from goalkeeper Tressa Versteeg (Jr., Pella, Ia.) in her first collegiate start.

Luther forced Versteeg to make five first half saves. In the second 45-minute period, however, Macalester out-shot the Norse 10-1 and made the Luther keeper to register five stops while netting the game-winner at 73:56.

The Scots face a busy Labor Day weekend. They host St. Scholastica on Friday (Sept. 4) at 1 p.m. and Wartburg on Sunday (Sept. 6) at 3 p.m. Both matches are part of a women's-men's doubleheader at Macalester Stadium.
