Scots beat St. Olaf 1-0; play Saturday at Carleton for MIAC playoff crown

Macalester vs. St. Olaf statistics | MIAC Playoff web site

Taylor Rasmussen (Fy., Eagan, Minn. / Eastview) scored off a corner kick from three yards out to give Macalester a 1-0 double overtime win over visiting St. Olaf in an MIAC playoff semi-final match at Macalester Stadium. Winners of five in a row, the Scots will play Saturday (Nov. 7) at Carleton for the MIAC playoff title and a berth in the upcoming NCAA Division III playoffs. The Scots are looking for their first NCAA tourney appearance since 2005.

Macalester's match Saturday in Northfield is set for 1 p.m. The Knights are the three-time MIAC regular-season champs and easily rolled past St. Thomas 3-0 earlier in the day in their conference semi-final tilt. Carleton toppled Mac 3-0 at the end of September in Northfield.  No. 2 seed Mac comes in at 11-7-1 and No. 1 Carleton is 15-4.  A live webcast and LiveStats will be available through the Carleton web.

Now Mac's leading scorer on the season with six goals, Rasmussen has been a big force off the bench of late. He also netted the overtime Golden Goal last weekend at Hamline to get the Scots into the four-team league playoffs, and has scored in three straight games.

The Scots earned their fourth corner kick midway through the second 10-minute OT stanza, and the team took advantage when Jesse Geary's (So., Duluth, Minn. / Marshall) corner snuck through the Ole defense to the foot of Rasmussen from point-blank range.

Macalester's defense was superb all night and goalkeeper Matt Weyer (So., Cedarburg, Wis.) made five big saves to keep the Oles off the scoreboard. The Scots have yielded just three goals during their five-match win streak.

The Scots had a slight 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, getting three from Carson Gorecki (Sr., Mahtomedi, Minn.) and two by Reid Usedom (So., Asheville, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds) before the team's sixth and final shot on net by Rasmussen.
