Eagles top Scots 31-7

Macalester vs. Northwestern statistics

Northwestern College returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and went on to beat Macalester 31-7 in Roseville as the Eagles took advantage of four turnovers. Northwestern, a top contender for the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference title, improves to 3-2 on the season, while the Scots sink to 1-4.

Each team gained 18 first downs and NWC owned a slight 376-298 margin in total yardage. The biggest difference was that Northwestern was able to hold on to the ball, taking advantage of a 4-1 turnover margin to keep the visitors off the scoreboard until the third quarter.

The Scots played much better in the second half, holding NWC to just a field goal, and never giving up despite a 28-0 Eagle lead after the first half of play.

Quarterback Trevor Miehe (Jr., Holmen, Wis.) went 25-for-38 for a career-high 258 yards for the Scots, completing seven passes each to Matt Mitchell (Jr., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) and Kevin Finnegan (Jr., Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park-River Forest). Mitchell had 77 yards in receiving yardage and Finnegan finished with 63 yards.

Jon Elliott (Jr., El Paso, Tex. / Andress) added six receptions for 59 yards and Mike Snavely (So., Minneapolis, Minn. / Southwest) caught four passes for 51 yards, including an 11-yard reception from Miehe in the third quarter for Mac's lone touchdown.

Macalester's top tacklers were Aaron Gallegos (Fy., Lakeville, Minn. / North) and Josh Boomgaarden (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) with nine stops apiece. Will Dhonau (So., Fond du lac, Wis.) was in on seven tackles.

Northwestern was led by Kyle Thomforde with five receptions for 62 yards and one carry for a 68-yard touchdown. He also started the day with an 86-yard kickoff return.

The Scots will be out to snap a two-game skid when they travel to Duluth next Saturday (Oct. 10) to face St. Scholastica.  Macalester beat the Saints last year in St. Paul in Mac's first-ever overtime game.
