Scots move closer to playoffs with 2-0 win at St. Ben’s

Macalester vs. St. Benedict statistics

Emily Bardwell (Jr., Denver, Colo. / East) scored both Macalester goals as the Scots toppled St. Benedict 2-0 in St. Joseph to move closer to clinching a spot in next week's MIAC playoffs. The Scots take over third place in the MIAC standings at 6-3-1 and are 11-4-2 overall. Mac looks to lock up a bid Saturday (Oct. 31) when it hosts Hamline at 1 p.m.

The Scots, who have made the four-team playoffs every year since the conference started hosting the tournament in 2003, can make their seventh straight appearance if they beat Hamline. That would clinch a No. 3 seed, or a No. 2 if St. Thomas is upset by St. Mary's. If Mac ties the Pipers, the Scots can still make the playoffs if Carleton and St. Olaf tie, or if Concordia beats St. Ben's.

Concordia (9-0-1) and St. Thomas (7-2-1) are already in. The other contenders are Macalester (6-3-1), Carleton (5-2-3), St. Olaf (6-4) and St. Benedict (6-4).

Bardwell, the team leading scorer, netted her 10th of the season at 19:45 and 11th very late at 89:39. Both scores were unassisted. Rosie Glenn-Finer (Fy., San Francisco, Calif. / Lick Wilmerding) was excellent in goal again, making nine saves against the Blazer pressure to post her second big shutout in as many games. She also blanked St. Thomas last weekend in her first career start.

The Blazers had a 12-10 lead in shots and 9-6 advantage in shots on goal. They led by a 5-1 margin in corner kicks. Bardwell accounted for four of her team's six shots on net.
