Macalester knocks off St. Thomas 1-0 in OT

Macalester vs. St. Thomas statistics

Maddy Cochrane (Sr., Grand Marais, Minn. / Cook County) broke a scoreless tie in the eighth minute of overtime as visiting Macalester knocked off St. Thomas 1-0, handing the Tommies their first MIAC defeat of the season. Macalester's keeps its hopes alive for a top-four MIAC finish and a spot in the league playoffs with its biggest win of the year.

Cochrane, who has three goals on the campaign to go along with five assists, netted the game-winner at 97:46 on a Kat Lenhart (Fy., Fairview, N.C. / A.C. Reynolds) assist as the Scots held off the Tommies despite being out-shot 19-6 as UST controlled the attack throughout. St. Thomas came in ranked third in the North Region.

Rosie Glenn-Finer (Fy., San Francisco, Calif. / Lick Wilmerding) made her first collegiate start in goal one to remember against the nation's No. 24-ranked team. Despite pressure from the UST forwards throughout and seven Tommie corner kicks, Glenn-Finer turned away all eight St. Thomas shots on goal, including six in the second period, to post the shutout.

The defeat drops defending champ St. Thomas into second place behind Concordia in the MIAC standings. Concordia is 8-0-1 and UST is 7-1-1. St. Olaf and St. Benedict are tied for fourth at 6-3, while Mac remains in the race at 5-3-1.  Macalester snaps an impressive 20-game regular-season MIAC unbeaten streak by St. Thomas.

Hours after winning his 295th game as women's soccer goal at Mac, head coach John Leaney was inducted into the Macalester M Club Hall of Fame.  Leaney's Macalester's teams have gone 295-77-33 since he took over as coach in 1989.  Today's victory gives the Scots a 10-4-2 record and double-digits in the win total for the 20th time in 21 seasons under Leaney.

Macalester faces another major MIAC test next Wednesday (Oct. 28) at St. Benedict in an equally crucial conference match.
