Last-minute victory turns into last-minute defeat to University of Chicago

Macalester vs. Chicago statistics

Elliott
Macalester took the lead with an offensive fumble return for a touchdown with just :46 to play in the fourth quarter, but visiting University of Chicago responded with a quick scoring drive of its own to hand the Scots a heart-breaking 28-24 defeat in St. Paul. The Scots fall to 2-5 on the season, while the Maroons move over .500 at 3-2.

Chicago trailed 16-7 after Macalester's Jake McDonnell (Jr., Duluth, Minn.  / Marshall) sprinted 86 yards after a short reception out of the backfield. The Maroons, however, responded with a 13-play, 69-yard scoring drive, and then a seven-play, 61-yard drive to go on top 21-16 with 5:29 to play.

The Scots then went 72 yards on 12 plays to go back up in this exciting battle. Jon Elliott (Jr., El Paso, Texas / Andress) picked up a fumble deep inside UC territory and ran it in from six yards away as Macalester re-gained the lead at 24-21 with just :46 to play.  The Scots used good clock management on this long drive, getting 12 plays off in just 4:43, and appeared headed for the win.

A long kickoff return set up the dramatic game-winning 15-yard TD pass from Marshall Oium to Clay Wolff with just :15 to play.

Each team compiled over 400 yards in total offense and there were 50 first downs on the day.

Macalester quarterback Trevor Miehe (Jr., Holmen, Wis.) went 19-for-29 for 256 yards. McDonnell totaled 142 yards on six receptions, much of it on the 86-yard screen pass for a thrilling touchdown, and also ran for 81 yards.

Nathan Coppersmith (So., Concord, Mass. / Concord Academy) got the scoring started early in the second quarter with a 33-yard field. Chicago scored next with just over five minutes before halftime, but Mac went on a quick nine-play drive and took a 9-7 lead at the break on a 12-yard reverse by Elliott.

McDonnell's long TD catch and run and Elliott's key fumble recovery for a score in the second half could not overcome Chicago's three fourth quarter touchdowns.

Matt Elliott (Jr. El Paso, Tex. / Andress) led the Mac defense with 13 tackles, while Josh Boomgaarden (Sr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) added 12 stops and leads the team with 64 on the season.  Adam Bunkoske (Fy., Beaver Dam, Wis. / Wayland Academy) intercepted a fourth quarter pass in the end zone for a touchback for his second pick of the season.  Nate Sands (So., Madison, Wis. / East) collected nine tackles. Macalester's defense broke up four pass attempts.

Chicago's Francis Adarkwa ran for 143 yards on 29 carries, and Oium was 24-for-47 for 269 yards and two touchdowns. Dee Brizzolara caught nine passes for 130 and set up the winning touchdown with a 43-yard kickoff return.

On Saturday (Oct. 24), the Scots play host to Martin Luther at 1 p.m.
