Bethel holds off late Macalester charge

Macalester vs. Bethel statistics

Bethel held off upset-minded Macalester, getting five players in double figures to defeat the Scots 73-60 in Arden Hills and keep its hold on second place in the conference standings by a narrow ½ game over three other teams.

The Royals had a double-digit margin for most of the second half, but had to hold on to a six-point lead after Macalester made a late 9-0 burst to make the score 66-60 with 2:01 to play. Five free throws in six attempts and a dunk over the final couple minutes, however, sealed the BU victory.

Macalester shot a solid 47%, compared to 41% for the home team, but Bethel enjoyed a +10 turnover advantage and held the Scots to three offensive boards. Bethel led 30-8 in points in the paint and has now won four straight.

Colin Keeley (So., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson) scored 17 points on a 7-for-14 shooting night to lead the Scots for the ninth time this season and third game in a row. Keeley has paced the Scots in seven of their past nine games and has boosted his scoring average to 13.8. Paul Richie (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) added 10 points and Kyle Hamblett (So., Paris, France / American School of Paris) handed out four assists.

During Mac's late 9-0 lead to make things interesting, the Scots received a three-point play from Jerry Kraus (Jr., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral (Colo.)), followed by a Richie three-point shot, and quickly followed after that by a Richie three-point play.

Bethel was led by Tim Madson, who netted 16 of his game-high 22 points in the second half. Double-doubles were registered by Mike Moberg (14 points and 10 rebounds) and Nathan Robertson (10 and 11).

Macalester plays host to the only remaining NCAA Division III team, No. 1-ranked St. Thomas, on Saturday (Jan. 31) at 3 p.m.

This is Toys for Teens Day, sponsored by Mac's Student-Athletic Advisory Council. Attendees are encouraged to make a donation of canned goods or cash. Those making a donation will be entered into a halftime drawing for assorted prizes. The two drawings will be held at halftime of each game. All donations will go to Second Harvest Food Shelf.
