Cardinals slip past Macalester in overtime

Macalester vs. St. Mary's statistics

Macalester appeared headed for its first win of the season, but St. Mary's knocked down a three-pointer with 2.6 seconds left to force an extra five minute session and went on to defeat the Scots 70-65 in St. Paul. The Cardinals move to 5-11 overall and 4-7 in the MIAC. The Scots, who also lost a heart-breaker to St. Mary's earlier this season in Winona, drop to a frustrating 0-16 on the year, 0-11 in the MIAC.

The Scots held SMU to a 37% shooting figure on the night, but the Cards pulled down 19 offensive boards and enjoyed a 24-17 turnover advantage. St. Mary's overcame a 19-for-36 free throw performance. The Cardinals out-scored Macalester 17-8 in points off turnovers and 16-8 in second chance points.

Macalester led 30-21 at halftime as St. Mary's was 7-for-30 from the floor (23%) and 0-for-8 on three-point tries. St. Mary's cut into the Macalester advantage early in the second half and the game was close the rest of the way. After SMU tallied the first five points of the second half, the lead was never bigger than six points for either team.

Macalester took a 40-39 lead at the 10:53. A Hamblett three-pointer put the Scots up by six points at 57-51 with 2:52 left in regulation, but St. Mary's fought back with five unanswered points. A Keeley jumper with :19 remaining made the lead three points in favor of Macalester before SMU's Lukas Holland sent the contest into OT.

Colin Keeley (So., Kildeer, Ill. / Stevenson) contributed 19 points and nine rebounds to pace the Scots. Paul Richie (Jr., Grand Rapids, Minn.) added 16 points and Kyle Hamblett (So., Paris, France / American School of Paris) scored 14.

Jerry Kraus (Jr., Bucharest, Romania / Chaparral (Colo.)) led all rebounders with 12 boards.

Holland, who send the contest into OT, paced St. Mary's with 21 points while going 4-for-5 from three-point range. Will Wright had a rare off night but finished with key baskets and still finished with 17 points. Bradley Bruno had a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 boards.

Holland began the overtime session with another three-pointer and a couple Wright buckets put SMU up 66-61 with just 1:38 remaining.

Macalester makes the short trip up Snelling Ave. on Saturday (Jan. 24) to take on Hamline.
