Macalester vs. Maranatha Baptist statistics
Macalester dominated time of possession and total yardage statistics and defeated Maranatha Baptist Bible (Wis.) 28-14 in St. Paul in the first-ever meeting between these two schools. With their second straight triumph, the Scots move to 2-1. The visiting Crusaders drop to 0-3.
T. Joe Loiselle (Fy., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) carried the ball 34 times for 145 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback
Trevor Miehe (So., Holmen, Wis.) passed for 202 yards while running it in for a couple scores himself.
The Scots out-gained Maranatha Baptist 399-210 in total yardage and had offensive possession for 38:11 out of 60 minutes (their average on the season). Macalester snapped the ball 75 times, compared to 46 for MBBC, and went an excellent 12-for-18 on third-down conversions.
Loiselle was a workhorse again. After running for 154 yards in last week's win over Crown, Loiselle carried the football 34 times for another 145 as his college career gets off to an excellent start.
Miehe gave the Scots a safe cushion when he sprinted in from 28 yards out with 2:09 left on the game. He went 15-for-25 passing and through the season's first three games is completing 65% of his attempts.
Miehe began the scoring with a seven-run run late in the second quarter.
Zach Hahn (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) picked off a Crusader pass two plays later and with 2:22 left in the half, the Scots staged a seven-play scoring drive, capped off by a Loiselle 8-yard TD with :12 before the intermission. Macalester converted a fourth-down play and earlier came back from a 1st and 23 to go.
After Maranatha Baptist scored to cut the lead in half on an 80-yard drive midway through the second half, Mac responded by driving 80 yards on 14 plays as Loiselle finished things off on a 1-yard plunge.
The Crusaders went on a quick two-play drive to get to within a touchdown again, but a quick 60-yard Macalester possession put the game away. Late in the game,
Graham Brown (Fy., Annandale, Minn.) clinched it with an interception and 64-yard return.
Macalester's defense was strong once again as the Scots enjoyed a 4-1 turnover advantage. Hahn and
Josh Boomgaarden (Jr., Eden Prairie, Minn.) were in on eight tackles each to lead the way. Boomgaarden had a couple tackles for loss, and
Ed Fitzpatrick (Sr., Honolulu, Hi. / Iolani) broke up two passes and made five tackles. The Crusaders didn't get their fourth first down of the day until the five-minute mark of the third quarter.
Miehe's top targets were
Matt Mitchell (So., Chippewa Falls, Wis.) with four catches for 64 yards and
Nash Traylor (Jr., Sonora, Tex.) with three receptions for 61.
The Scots travel to Northfield next Saturday (Sept. 27) to challenge Carleton.
