Dramatic comeback for sweep comes up a run short against Hamline

Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

After winning a 4-2 pitching dual, the Scots nearly pulled off a come-from-behind win in the nightcap for the sweep before coming up a run short in a 9-8 game against Hamline in the season-finale at Midway Stadium.

James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) stranded seven runners on base in the opener to boost his final season record to 7-2 while closing out with a 2.29 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 55 innings pitched. Cody Ching (Sr., Olympia, Wash.) delivered a two-out, two-run single to tie the score in the bottom on the fourth inning after the Pipers jumped out in front 2-0. Trevor Miehe (Fy., Holmen, Wis.) followed that by driving in Michael Kennedy (So., Chicago, Ill. / Northside Prep) with the game winning hit.

In game two, Hamline ace Josh Roiger dominated the contest before being pulled with seemingly-save 9-1 lead in the sixth. Macalester, however, made things a little interesting with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth and then very interesting with five runs on five hits in the seventh – mostly with two outs - only to make the final out with the game-tying runner standing 90 feet away at third base.

Macalester closes out the season with a 14-23 overall record and 7-13 MIAC mark.  Hamline is fighting for a conference playoff bid and goes to 22-15 on the season, 11-7 in the MIAC, with two more regular-season games to go.  Five of Mac's final nine MIAC losses were by just a single run.

Macalester scored its five seventh-inning runs with two starts, starting with a bases loaded walk drawn by Joe Borer (Sr., St. Paul, Minn. / Central).  That was followed by a two-run single by Adam Kent (Sr., Madison, Wis. / West) and RBI singles by Ching and Robert Engel (So., Sunnyvale, Calif. / St. Lawrence) before the Pipers escaped the jam with the final out.
