Bethel takes pair from Scots

Game 1 box score | Game 2 box score

Bethel swept Macalester 4-3 and 9-2 on a cold afternoon in Arden Hills to keep its own MIAC playoff hopes alive and all but extinguish Mac's post-season ambitions. The Royals broke a 3-3 tie with a sixth-inning run to take the opener and in the nightcap jumped out to a 7-1 lead after two innings.

The Scots suffered their third straight one-run defeat in the first game and drop to 13-20 overall and 6-10 in the MIAC. Bethel goes to 18-14 overall, 8-7 in the conference and within ½ game of fourth-place Hamline in the fight for the final MIAC playoff spot.

James Murrey (So., Western Springs, Ill. / Lyons Township) was looking to improve to 7-1, but came up short in a pitcher's dual as the Royals tallied the winner in the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

Devin English (So., Annapolis, Md. / DeMatha), who had two of his team's five hits and scored a pair of runs in the first game, went 2-for-4 again in the nightcap from his leadoff spot with his team-leading fourth home run of the year. The Scots picked up a hit from each position in the batting order, but Bethel banged out 16 hits on the game.

Macalester plays Wednesday (April 30) at St. Olaf and closes out the season Saturday (May 3) against Hamline at Midway Stadium.
